I’m not going to pretend, I don’t have everything perfectly in place to begin this newsletter. But—I made an agreement with myself that I would begin before 2023, and so here I am, showing up on this digital page, however imperfectly. This, as I hope you’ll stick around to see, is one of my foundational beliefs about creative practice: Start before you are ready.
I have so many ideas for this space and I am so glad that you are here!
Practice and Curiosity is about how we get our work done
I’m starting this newsletter because I think creative practice itself is fascinating. Everything about it, from the practical day-to-day to the magical alchemy of it. Yes, we make things—songs, paintings, poems, inventions, books, drawings, dances—infinite forms of things. And yes, much time, space, and attention is paid to our efforts to make a living doing these things. Here, in this space, I want to invest attention in conversations about how we get our work done.
I’ll explore all kinds of topics related to creative practice:
Elements of creative practice
Examples of creative practice in history, the world, and amongst my readership
Barriers and solutions
Resistance, procrastination, and fear
Resolve, inspiration, action, and integration
Connecting with our creative community and with ourselves
Why we practice and how we get it done
Creative rhythms, routines, and habits
Cultivation, synthesis, and rest
Navigating failure, interruption, and lack of support
Identity and transformation
Organization and decision making
The good, the bad, and the wonderfully mundane!
I’m launching this newsletter because I wish it was already in the world and I could wait for someone to make it, or I can just go ahead and start it and get the conversation going. I want this, so I will make it. Creative practice at its best. I’ve been thinking about doing it for several years now, and with the erosion of creative community on social platforms, it’s time to begin.
Join me on Monday Mornings. Let’s have a quiet party.
I hope this will become a place of sustenance and community in an online world that is ever more skewed toward flash and noise. I need a space of respect and depth to share about creative practice and I’m guessing that you do too.
I hope that you come back often, join in the conversation, and subscribe below to make sure that this arrives in your inbox every Monday morning. You can expect some writing from me, and a list of resources, interesting tidbits, and inspiration. As this community grows, I’d like to add interviews and other offerings too!
Yours in practice,
Lisa
